Waitrose introduces flexitarian sausage range

Waitrose has launched a new range of meat sausages containing up to 35% fruit, vegetables or pulses.

Featuring added ingredients such as lentils, cauliflower and kale, the range is billed as one of the supermarket's new healthier food launches for 2018 and has been developed in response to shoppers looking to reduce their meat intake.

The products will also carry the new Waitrose 'Good Health' label, designed to make it easier for shoppers to make “healthier choices”.

The sausage range comprises 6 Pork, Butternut Squash, Quinoa & Kale Sausages (RRP £3.29 400g), 12 mini Pork, Butterbean, Lentil & Garlic Toulouse Style Sausages (RRP £3.29 400g) and 6 Spanish Style Pork, Chickpea, Spinach & Tomato Sausages (RRP £3.29 400g). There are also Cumberland Chipolatas with Mixed Pulses (RRP £3.29 375g).

The new range also includes a Protein Power Chicken and Chorizo Omelette Wrap (RRP £3.85), a Sweet Potato & Chipotle Sandwich (RRP £3.30), Beef Meatballs with Mixed Pulses (RRP £2.49 300g) and Beef Mince with Mixed Pulses (RRP £3.99 454g).

Nathalie Winn, Waitrose senior nutritionist, said: “We’ve recently found that a third of shoppers find it difficult to know which foods to choose for a healthy diet. Our new label will help busy customers find the healthier options on our shelves. Introducing more creative options to your diet, such as meat sausages packed with veggies, will keep mealtimes interesting and help keep healthy resolutions on track.”
