Peter Mellors takes Bpex West Midlands award

Mellors Farm Butchers was crowned overall champion in the West Midlands in the 2009/10 Bpex challenge.

Forty-four butchers from the surrounding region entered the event, at The Three Counties Showground in Malvern.

From 241 products put forward, nearly half achieved a gold award, scoring at least 95 out of 100.

Newark-based butchers Mellors won with a traditional-style pork pie, and will now go through to a national final, taking place in June at a London venue.

Peter Mellors said: It is a real boost for the business. Im excited about the final and the fact that we now have two products entered Im keeping my fingers firmly crossed.

Bpex butchery and product development manager Keith Fisher added: The standard of products entered was exceptionally high. We hope the awards continue to boost the profile of many businesses and the independent retail butchery trade.

H Dayus Family Butchers in Worcester won 15 gold awards, a silver and bronze award, in addition to the three category champion titles.
