Bakers beat butchers to take pie title
The best pie in Britain has been revealed as a Waitrose pork, chicken and ham pie, created by Walkers Charnwood Bakery.
The bakery beat off competition from butchers, fellow bakers and large food manufacturers to take the supreme champion title at this year’s British Pie Awards, which saw more than 700 different products entered into the competition at Melton Mowbray.
More than 60 judges were involved in the competition, with a number of celebrity chefs including Phil Vickery, Rosemary Shrager and Rachel Green. Matthew O’Callaghan, chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association, organiser of the event, said: “We were overwhelmed at the number of entries this year and the quality of the produce has been unbelievable.
“It was good, too, to see a number of smaller producers taking some of the major awards. Thank you to all of the bakers and butchers from our green and pleasant land for producing such perfect pies, all worthy of the much coveted title”.
