Scottish pig producer meetings

03 June, 2008

Scottish pig farmers will be asked to share their views on the best way forward for their hard pressed industry at a series of meetings next week.

The meetings will be held on 3 and 5 June in Old Meldrum and are being organised by the Scottish Pig Industry Strategy, which was set up by the Scottish Government when the sector reached crisis point in the wake of escalating feed costs.

They will give farmers the chance to influence a task group that was established to identify a broad range of measures that can help ease the sector back into profitability.

Bob Yuill of SAOS, who is coordinating the consultancy task group said: "This excellent team with hands on expertise of the pig industry, are making inroads into developing a practical strategy for the Scottish pig industry,

"The workshops will be a two way discussion to examine and agree the priorities for a programme going forward, with feedback from the industry to keep the team focused on practical solutions for the Scottish pork supply chain."

Team members and their specialist areas are: \Andrew Moxey - the importance of the Scottish Pig Industry

David Strachan - pig health

Alan Stevenson - processing facilities and what is needed for the future
