Midlands competition takes traditional angle

01 September, 2010

Butchers across the Midlands are being given the chance to battle it out to see who has the best products, with the launch of a new competition with a traditional twist.

The West Midlands Product Competition is being organised by industry stalwart Keith Boxley and other leading lights in the region, to help give the sector a boost and allow butchers to pick up some new skills and contacts.

The event, which will take place at the Wombourne Civic Centre, Wombourne, will judge across three categories sausages, black pudding and pies and will see products evaluated before a top one, two and three are selected by the judges. The overall sausage winner will also be eligible to go forward into MTJ's Champion of Champions competition in 2011.

Keith said: "We've got a good team of judges. We'll be shifting the best products on to a top table for people to view, and we'll pick the winners from there. It's a more traditional way of doing it, and it gives people the chance to get some good ideas.

"We want the competition to help get a bit of good morale going in the trade; there have been quite a few ups and downs of late, and this kind of thing will give us something good to shout about."

The event takes place on 30 September, and entry deadline is 23 September. Those looking to enter can contact Keith on 07812 332389.
