Compulsory COOL law a step closer

Compulsory country-of-origin labelling on meat products has been recommended by the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council (EPSCO), part of the Council of Europe.

At the first reading of a draft regulation on food information to consumers, EPSCO agreed country-of-origin labelling should be compulsory, as failure to do so would mislead consumers, and would be requested for several types of meat pork, lamb, and poultry. Beef is already subject to compulsory country-of-origin labelling through a separate piece of legislation. The new regulations have now been sent back to the European Parliament for consideration.

An 'Amendment 205' clause, which would have required all meat and meat products slaughtered by religious methods to be compulsorily labelled as such, was rejected by the EU Council, according to reports. But industry insiders have disputed this claim, saying the proposal was never on the agenda in the first place.
