Beef exports up 47%
Beef exports shot up last November, recording a 47% year-on-year increase thanks to strong international sales in newer markets, it has been revealed.
Eblex, the levy body, said that its data reported that 11,829 tonnes of were exported during the month – which in turn meant that 97,200 tonnes left the country for the year.
It also revealed that all destinations were up – with the Netherlands some 63.7% higher, France +20.3%, and Italy +28%. However, the biggest increases of exports were in Germany and and Poland, where the volume of beef sold to those countries soared by 612% and 1,000% respectively.
Jean-Pierre Garnier, export manager for Eblex, said: “We are indeed very pleased with the development of our beef exports. However, this is ‘work in progress’. Over the next few years we need to retake our due market share on core markets and rise the share of beef exports to a ‘natural’ 20% - 25% of our production.
“We also need to progress much further with the exports of edible offal and fifth-quarter products. This will mean an increase in the commercial pressure and sensible investment in target markets. We are benefiting from strong demand, limited European and world beef supplies and a relatively favourable exchange rate.”
Garnier also told how the levy body would be continuing its focus on aiming to increase exports. The organisation has plans to present English beef and lamb to Czech and other central European buyers at a Taste of Britain event in Prague – this follows on from its presence at the European Fine Food Fair in Maastricht in the Netherlands.
