Waitrose plans expansion

15 February, 2011

Waitrose has announced plans to open and operate five stores on the Channel Islands and to start exporting to the USA and Canada.

The first store will open in St Saviour, Jersey this week with the other four stores opening throughout March and April.

In order to comply with legal requirements, the supermarket chain had to establish two new operating companies in the Channel Islands to run the stores, Waitrose Jersey Ltd and Waitrose Guernsey Ltd.

Executives said the expansion is not a test-run for setting up Waitrose branches overseas and that the business priority remains on increasing its market share in Britain, but foreign franchise operations are increasing.

Waitrose shops have opened in Bahrain and Dubai and, under current plans, another 20-25 will carry its name and products in other parts of the Gulf.
