Morrisons steps up to SuperMeat line-up
Morrisons will be joining the line-up for the first time for the UK supermarket sector’s most hotly contested competition, the SuperMeat & Fish Awards 2011.
So far, the awards have seven major retailers taking part to compete on both stores and products. Joining Morrisons are Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, The Co-operative Food, Budgens and Lidl, all of which will be facing off to take home titles on the night.
The SuperMeat & Fish Awards 2011 are now in their 12th year and show no signs of slowing down, remaining one of the most popular events in the meat industry calendar. Ed Bedington, editor of MTJ, said:
“I’m delighted to be announcing the launch of this year’s SuperMeat awards, and it’s great to have Morrisons joining us for the first time. These awards continue to go from strength to strength and this year’s event is certainly shaping up to be one of the strongest yet.
“Entries were at record levels last year, and I’ve no doubt we’ll be facing a similar standard and volume this year, so our judges will certainly have a tough task.”
Companies supplying into the competing retailers and looking to enter products into the awards need to get their entries in by 25 March. This year sees the return of our new category from last year, Best Packaging, along with a host of other categories including Best Value Product and Most Sustainable.
MTJ will also be running the popular Meat Personality of the Year competition, which last year was taken by Sainsbury’s red meat buyer Tom Harvey, and is calling for nominations from the industry. The four most popular nominations will then be put to the vote, with the winner announced on the
night. Email your nomination to firstname.lastname@example.org.
These prestigious awards, held at the Park Lane Hilton Hotel in London, on 7 July, evaluate products and stores, with one retailer being declared the overall SuperMeat Retailer of the Year. Last year saw Sainsbury’s take home the ultimate title.
Bedington added: “Sainsbury’s had a great night and did a brilliant job of promoting their win, with billboard and radio adverts across the UK announcing their success. This year I expect the competition to be just as fierce and I look forward to seeing the results on the night.”
Sponsors for the event so far include Bpex, Clarke Willmott, Eblex, HCC – Meat Promotion Wales, Verstegen Spices & Sauces and the Vion Food Group.
