FSA publishes cause for concern abattoir list

03 March, 2011

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has published a controversial list of meat processors and abattoirs on its cause of concern list – after it was hit by a Freedom of Information request.

The FSA had planned to “name and shame” plants that were not compliant with its health and standards regulations for longer than a year on its website by May. But it was forced to shelve the plans at its last board meeting, as members called for a discussion paper on the topic.

Now, it appears, the matter has been taken out of its hands thanks to the Freedom of Information request.

A spokeswoman for the FSA would not say who had issued the request.

The plants on the list are:

SANDYFORD ABATTOIR (PAISLEY) LIMITED
CLEVELAND MEAT CO LTD
HCF POULTRY LTD
J & E MEDCALF LTD
PREMIER HALAL MEATS LTD
CHESHIRE HALAL UK LTD
MR MEATS WHOLESALE LTD
HASHAMS HALAL POULTRY COMPANY
SUMMERS POULTRY PRODUCTS LTD
CE PARTRIDGE & SON LTD
C HUMPHREYS & SONS
A & G BARBER LTD
RICHARDS J V (RIETFONTEIN) LTD

The FSA spokeswoman added: “The board had decided to put back the publishing the details after members requested a paper on the issue. A paper will still be prepared for the next board meeting.”
