Dunbia celebrates Butchery Academy success
Dunbia has celebrated the success of the first group of young people to complete an NVQ Level 2 in food manufacture as part of the new Dunbia Butchery Academy training programme.
The Butchery Academy was set up to give local young school and college-leavers the chance to gain valuable training whilst earning.
Having completed the first stage in the eighteen month-long programme programme, the five students, Leanne Watt, Aisling Fox, Ryan Sloane, Kristian Madill and Ashley Boyd, will continue their practical and theoretical learning, and are guaranteed employment upon successfully completing the course.
The students were presented with their diplomas in a presentation evening attended by Dr Bill McGinnis, Northern Ireland Adviser on Employment and Skills, Deputy Major of Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough County Councillor, Pat Daly and leading industry representatives.
Dr Bill McGinnis said: “Dunbia is an excellent example of a locally owned company which has recognised the important contribution that skills development and training make to competitiveness particularly in international markets.
“The Butchery Academy is an innovative and highly successful response to a skills gap that management pinpointed in 2008 and has strengthened links between this progressive company and colleges and schools in the region.
“The Academy offers young people opportunities to build rewarding careers with one of the leading businesses in food processing, in an industry now worth more than £3bn a year to the Northern Ireland economy.”
Pat Daly said that the scheme sent out a strong message of the company’s commitment to engaging with the local community and finding opportunities for young people during the difficult economic climate. He said the company was a key employer in the Dungannon district, employing some 900 people in the area, and an essential contributor to the local economy.
