Brunei Halal brand appoints new UK CEO

12 August, 2011

Far-Eastern brand Brunei Halal has appointed Dr Mohammed Nazir to head up its new UK subsidiary, Brunei Wafirah UK Ltd.

Nazir’s appointment as the new company’s chief executive officer comes ahead of the establishment of a UK office and warehouse, which are said to be well underway. The company will act as a sales and distribution platform to the UK and European markets, having identified the potential growth in these markets partly due to the largely uncoordinated supply chain and increasing demand for premium halal products.

Nazir has extensive experience in the international food production, retail and wholesale sector, as well as in the Islamic finance and social enterprise sectors. He was the chairman of the European Halal Development Agency and has advised the UK government on enterprise support, and trade and investment strategies. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list last year for his services to business.

In 2000 he has led a research project to identify the need to adopt intelligent manufacturing techniques (IMT) which led to the ongoing research on the UK and international halal markets. Focussing on the development of halal standards, it contributed to the UK’s policy change in supporting the halal meat and food sector in both the home and export markets.

Noel Shield, chief executive of parent company Brunei Wafirah Holdings Sdn Bhd, said: “We had considered many candidates during the search for the UK office’s CEO.

“Dr Nazir shares our passion for issues surrounding the halal industry particularly in the UK. He is the right CEO to lead the strategies we have in place.”

Dr Nazir said: “I am delighted to be part of an organisation that has in its core the objective of bringing complete halal assurance to the muslim consumer in UK and Europe, where the halal market is currently fragmented.”

The Brunei Halal brand is an initiative of the Brunei government, and run by Brunei Wafirah Holdings Sdn Bhd. It opened its first international office in Singapore in 2010.
