Brakes sell Browns Foodservice
Specialist meat wholesaler, Browns Foodservice has been sold to Ensors Gloucestershire by the Brakes Group.
Brakes acquired Warwickshire based Browns in 2010 with the aim of increasing its customer base and strengthening specialist meat availability.
Brakes Group Chief Financial Officer, Phil Wieland said: “Browns Foodservice has been an important part of the Brakes Group, but recently it has become apparent that we can operate a more efficient route to market with Browns in alternative ownership. We have therefore taken the decision to sell the business to Ensors and we will continue to work closely with them, both in supplying product to Brakes Group and on the successful transition of the Browns business.”
Wieland confirmed that the businesses will continue to work together: “Our business relationship will continue, as Browns deliveries to customers are carried out on Brakes Group vehicles and this arrangement will continue following the sale through an ongoing distribution agreement.”
Browns Foodservice, which was founded in 1983 and offers fresh meat, game and poultry to caterers, had a turnover of £14.8m in its last audited accounts for the year ended 31 December 2011.
Ensors is a family owned and run company that moved into a new, purpose built plant last December. Its foodservice, retail packing, sausage making and bacon curing arm is already operating from the new plant with an abattoir due to come on stream within the next few months.
