Spooky meat wins award

Craft butchers in Scotland were challenged to create themed meat products to excite customers and get them thinking.

The challenge came in the form of a competition arranged by the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders Association, which saw Scottish craft butchers create Halloween- and Bonfire Night-themed products.

Ogre’s eyes in swamp sauce, catherine wheel sausages and witches’ cauldrons were some of the category winners. Overall winner of the Halloween category, Pauls Quality Butchers from Kirkintilloch, likened the competition to a challenge from I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.

Scott Brothers from Dundee won the best Bonfire Night product with catherine wheels — sausages on a stick.

The companies’ products also proved to be a real treat when it came to judging, as they were chosen to be winners out of more than 80 entries in each of the categories. They were also said to be some of the tastiest and most promotable products entered.

Presenting the awards was event sponsor John Gallagher from McDonnells. Gallagher said: “It was really good to see all the scary products and lots of great product ideas come forward. I think we can look forward to seeing some real innovation in butchers’ shops this Halloween and Bonfire Night.”

Trick-or-Treat award overall winner:

  • Ogre’s Eyes With Swamp Sauce, Pauls Quality Butcher, Kirkintilloch.

Bonfire Night award overall winner:

  • Catherine wheel, Scott Brothers, Dundee.
