North-east butcher Kenneth Tompkin, 59, has finally retired - after 43 years in the trade.

Kenneth had spent the last 34 years at Newboulds Butchers in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough, and is retiring as manager. He spent his early years working at butchers' shops in Grangetown, Stockton, Thornaby and Middlesbrough.

Kenneth said: "I'll have a rest over Christmas, then I'll decide what to do.

"I've got to know the regular customers over the years and I will miss it, but it is about time I took it easy.

"I've always been handy building things, such as fitted kitchens, but I lost my interest when my wife, Margaret, died five years ago. But I think I might take that up again now."
