UK finishes fifth in Young Butcher Competition

The UK came fifth last weekend after two tough days of tasks in this year’s International Young Butcher Competition.

Andrew Brassington of Ludlow Food Centre and Kyle Mottram of Keelham Farm Shop in Bradford, who are both 22, represented the UK in the two-day butchery skills competition where they completed six gruelling tasks.

They competed against several other teams of young butchers from all over Europe. Entrants were aged between 18 and 23 and the competition ended in Frankfurt at the international meat exhibition IFFA on Saturday, 5 May.

Of the award and the competition Mottram said: “We’re going up and up and up. Next year or the year after, they should all be watching their backs.”

Meanwhile, Brassington explained that, although the pair hadn’t come first, second or third, that it was “good to get placed in something”. He added: “It’s a great achievement for the Great British team and the National Federation of Meat and Food Traders (NFMFT). What we’re doing now is just the early stage of what the team can achieve.”

Entry into the competition for the British team was arranged by NFMFt chief executive Roger Kelsey, who told that the team had done very well. He said: “The overall team performance this year was marginally better than last year. It’s been a more difficult competition because last year Austria and Luxembourg were particularly weak. This year you’ve got the top teams in Europe competing and the competition has been tougher because everyone plays the game.”

As well as placing fifth in the competition as a whole, the UK team won year third place in the stuffed roast round.

The overall winner of the International Young Butcher Competition was the Dutch team, which has won for the last three years.
