Welfare body urges food firms to enter awards

UK and European food manufacturers, retailers and foodservice businesses are encouraged to enter the Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards, hosted by Compassion in World Farming (CIWF).

This year’s award ceremony will be the sixth so far and will be held in Paris in October, celebrating the achievements of the European market.

Director of food business at CIWF Dr Tracey Jones said: “By working with the largest food manufacturers, foodservice businesses and retail chains, we can achieve the greatest impact for farm animal welfare by raising baseline standards.

“These companies make, serve and sell the vast majority of the food we consume and have it in their power to make a real difference to the lives of the millions of animals reared for food each year. We work with food companies on an individual basis to help and advise them on how to adopt policies and practices that have tangible benefits for farm animals, and the Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards enable us to formerly recognise their achievements.”

More than 500 organisations have won the award previously, including Unilever, IKEA, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Prêt A Manger, KFC and Compass Group.
