Ex-butcher with an eye for an old photo

Although he spent more than 30 years in the meat industry as a butcher, 68-year-old Somerset man Norman Finnimore still has passion for the trade.

Norman has been out of the butchery game for a few years now, but is still keen to learn more about the sector he gave so many years to.

That passion and interest has bloomed into a collage of historic and modern pictures on Norman’s Flickr page, which he has been collecting from old friends and colleagues for the last two-years.

“Lots of the pictures have been bought from eBay, or I have had them lent to me,” he said. “I just want people who have worked in the trade, and have pictures from the past, to get in touch and share them with me – I haven’t had too many butchery photos in.”

The retired butcher said he doesn’t have any firm plans for the pictures he is gathering. “I just want to fill in the gaps really,” he says.

However, he has now collected more than 700 pictures that cover the meat trade, including some famous brands and the vehicles used to carry meat across the country.

Norman’s Flickr page has become extremely popular, despite him not knowing how to use the website at first, and he has now received more than 300,000 views since it was launched nearly two-years ago. “I had only been on Flickr to look at pictures at first – I didn’t really know how to upload anything. I decided to give it a go and now I’m always putting-up pictures.”

He asks for anyone with old pictures from the meat industry to get in touch with him via his email address below.
