Sainsbury’s to create online fulfilment centre
Nearly 400 jobs could eventually be created by Sainsbury’s, following plans to support its rapidly-growing online grocery business with dedicated online fulfilment centre.
The centre will be opened in Bromley-By-Bow, East London, Sainsbury’s announced, shortly after revealing it had reached online annual sales of £1bn in September.
According to the chain, its new online fulfilment centre, which is due to open in a matter of years, will help Sainsbury’s meet an increase in demand for online groceries in London and the south east.
Around 20,000 extra customers will be served by the centre each week, which will take up 185,000sq ft of land.
Sainsbury’s director of online, digital and cross-channel Jon Rudoe said the new site was being developed with customers in mind and will support store-based operations, which will continue to be the foundation of its online grocery business.
“I am confident that this new facility will take our online grocery operation to the next level and put us in a perfect position to meet the growing demand in London and the south east,” he said.
