Italian sausage wins county competition

A locally-sourced sausage with a Continental twist won the top prize at this year's Great Hampshire Sausage, Pie & Ready Meal competition.

Simon Broadribb, of Uptons of Bassett in Southampton, was named supreme champion on 4 March, after impressing judges with an Italian-style sausage made with Hamphire free-range pork and Italian herbs and spices. The butcher, who also won the champion trophy for 'speciality pork sausage' and 13 gold awards, fought off stiff competition to win, with over 20 Hampshire products submitted for judging.

"Winning the Supreme Champion is a dream come true and makes all the hard work we put into the business worthwhile," said Simon, who will now go on to enter MTJ's Champion of Champion sausage competition in October.

The Great Hampshire, Sausage, Pie & Ready Meal competition is sponsored by BPEX, with support from Hampshire County Council, SEEDA and Lucas Ingredients.

Competition facilitator John Holden organised the judging team, comprising professional sausage-makers from across the UK and specially invited local guests. He described the competition as "the best attended regional competition that I am involved in, given that entries come from a single county".

Other winners included Greenfield Pork Products of Andover, which took home the Traditional Pork Sausage trophy, Hedge End Butchers of Southampton, which won the Beef and Lamb Speciality Sausage prize and Price Farm Foods, of Fordingbridge, named Home Cured Bacon Champion.
