Bernard Matthews to cut 90 jobs

Up to 90 jobs could go from the Bernard Matthews operation in Norfolk as part of a company business review.

According to the company the jobs losses are likely to be centred round the head office unit at Great Witchingham, near Norwich.

A company spokesman commented: "Over the last three years we have faced a series of major challenges and as a result we embarked on a full review of all of the company's activities, with the aim of bringing Bernard Matthews back to strong

profitability based on its core business of farming and producing quality poultry products.

"We will now enter into a consultation process with some of our employees, which is expected to lead to approximately 90 redundancies, less than 3.5% of its

total workforce.

"The review has addressed all aspects of the company, its people, processes and its products, with the aim being that the business can confidently move forward

and safeguard the future of its 2,600 remaining employees in East Anglia."

Bernard Matthews announced last week that it was in negotiation to sell its sandwich making business to Kerry Foods.
