Now, hands-on job experience beckons

A special scheme to gain some hands-on experience at an award-winning butcher's business has been launched.

The Institute of Meat has teamed up with John Mettrick to offer an opportunity for one lucky applicant to spend three weeks working at John's Derbyshire-based business, JW Mettrick & Sons.

The initiative, sponsored by the Gary Baker Award Scheme, will enable the winner to experience every aspect of meat production, from selection to slaughter and butchery to retail, as well as further processing and catering.

JW Mettrick runs two shops in the Derbyshire area, an abattoir and a thriving internet business and is a previous winner of MTJ's Top Shop competition, now Butcher's Shop of the Year.

Chairman of the Institute of Meat John Richardson said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious person looking to build on their career in the trade to learn from one the UK's top professional butchers."

Applications are open to anyone in the industry, aged between 17 and 25, and must be sent to The Administrator The Institute of Meat, Butchers' Hall, 87 Bartholomew Close, London EC1A 7EB, by 27 July.
