Yorkshire butchers prepare for top contest

Butchers from across Yorkshire will be gearing up for the 21st Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage, Black Pudding & Beefburger Competition, which will be held on Sunday, 18 October.

Taking place at Bradford’s Cedar Court Hotel and organised by the Confederation of Yorkshire Butchers Councils, the competition last year attracted 300 entries county-wide. It is also open to Yorkshire’s farm shops and bakers who make products on their premises.

Premier trophy winners in 2008, all expected to return to defend their titles, were:

· Supreme champion pork pie – Voakes Pies, Whixley Grange, York.

· Reserve supreme champion pork pie – Bentleys Butchers, Pudsey, Leeds.

· Supreme champion sausage – Ellisons Butchers, Cullingworth, Keighley.

· Reserve supreme champion sausage – Farmer Copley Farm Shop, Purston, Pontefract.

· Champion black pudding – Kendalls Butchers, Pateley Bridge, Harrogate.

· Champion beefburger – Sutcliffes Butchers, Skipton.

All championship, 1st, 2nd and 3rd-placed class winners will receive individual trophies and diplomas recognising their successes, while each finalist will be presented with Yorkshire Rose Award Diplomas to display in their premises.

A competition programme and entry forms – there is no limit on the number of entries – will be sent directly to all butchers in Yorkshire by the National Federation of Meat & Food Traders during September.

Entry forms can also be downloaded from the competition website at www.greatyorkscomp.co.uk <http://www.greatyorkscomp.co.uk/> The closing date is Saturday, 10 October.

The Confederation president’s annual dinner dance – Bradford butcher Ian Hopkins, whose shop is in Birkenshaw, holds office this year – will be held on the eve of the contest, Saturday, 17 October, at Cedar Court Hotel.

Topping the bill once again, following a rave reception last year, are Alison Jane and The Chequers Band. Booking forms for the dinner and overnight accommodation are available from treasurer Andrew Jones on 01484 715278, or can be dowloaded from the website
