Magical week for British sausages
Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee were in London on Monday to celebrate the launch of British Sausage Week and award the multiple retail and London regional winners of the ‘Magical Banger’ competition.
Picking up a gold award and the winner’s title for the multiple retail section was Anna Egan from Tesco and Simon Benning from Walkers Midshire Foods with their ‘Finest Pork & Spiced Apricot Sausages’.
A silver award was presented to Clare Hodgson of Marks & Spencer and Dominic Darby of Finnebrogue for their ‘British Outdoor Bred Chorizo Sausages’, while Lisa Magennis from Dalehead Foods picked up a bronze award for its ‘Free Range Gloucestershire Old Spot Pork & Sage Sausages’ for Waitrose.
They each received a much sought-after banger award, framed certificate and a cheque to donate to a charity of their choice or the British Sausage Week charity – The Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
The day also marked the start of the nationwide tour to find the most magical bangers in nine different regions. The London cook-off was the first stop, with Chris Blake Butchers picking up the coveted award from Paul and Debbie. The butcher’s ‘Old Victorian Sausage’ brings back the taste and texture of a magical bygone era and Steve Blake was surprised but delighted with his award.
He said: “I never imagined I’d get this far when I submitted my entry a few weeks ago. It was great to meet Paul and Debbie, and be a part of British Sausage Week 2009 – I’ve had a fantastic time!”
All winners and finalists for the competition were chosen following the initial judging stage in which a panel of experts scored each of the 115 sausage entries on taste, smell, texture and appearance. The tour continued throughout the week to Cambridge, Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, Huddersfield and Newcastle.
