Bpex South of England Roadshow hailed a success

The Bpex regional roadshows came to an end in Ardingly, West Sussex, where Chris Cripps from Green’s of Pangbourne butcher’s and pie shop was awarded Overall Champion of the South of England for his chorizo-stuffed pork cutlets.

Competitors could enter pork products across 12 categories including: pork sausages, burgers, bacon, gammon, pork pies, ready meals, black pudding, offal-based products and meatballs. Green’s of Pangbourne won 13 golds and was awarded three champion of category titles for its ham and chicken pie, ham quiche, and pork original sausage.

Cripps explained: “We are a family business that is always looking to develop new products for our customers. The chorizo-stuffed pork cutlets recipe was developed after we decided to offer something a bit different to a standard chop, as well as create something that would look good in the shop window. We only recently developed the recipe, which uses our own chorizo and locally sourced pork, and required a second opinion – it seems that in winning overall champion it has definitely passed the taste test.”

Keith Fisher, Bpex butchery and product development manager, described the high standard at the show: “We were delighted to see such a great turn-out from butchers in the region – 220 entries from 36 butchers is a great result for the South of England roadshow.

“The standards did not disappoint, which made judging incredibly hard. Over half of the products entered achieved a gold award, scoring between 95 and 100 points out of 100. That’s a real testament to the quality of the products being produced by butchers and farm shops in the south of England.”

Chris Watson family butchers also won eight golds, two silvers and was awarded two category champion titles for its dry-cured unsmoked rind-on streaky bacon and smokey barbecue pork burger.

The South of England Roadshow concludes the regional competitions. Greens of Pangbourne’s chorizo-stuffed pork cutlets will now be entered into the national final at Butchers’ Hall in London in June 2014.
