Butcher sponsors young weightlifter with meat
West Yorkshire butcher’s I&J Hewitt has started sponsoring an impressive 15-year-old weightlifter, who has just qualified for this year’s Commonwealth Games.
Ian Hewitt, who owns the shop in Keighley, West Yorkshire, sponsors athlete Rebekah Tiler with meat, helping her to get the protein she needs to compete at the highest level. He is supplying her with four big steaks and four chicken breasts each week.
He said: “She was using protein shakes, so I thought I have to pull my finger out here and sponsor her. She’s an exceptional young lady.”
Tiler became the youngest-ever weightlifter to win a British senior title in the British Championships earlier this year, and her Twitter account describes her as the world’s strongest 15-year-old.
Ian told meatinfo.co.uk that the sponsorship has generated a lot of interest in the area: “We’ve had the BBC down twice. Sports reporter Paul Ogden came and they filmed Rebekah picking up her meat. Everybody that comes into the shop talks about it. There’s a big interest in the girl, she’s an amazing kid.”
The butcher aims to stick with her as she sets her sights on Olympic glory. “She’s heading for the games in Brazil and she’s looking for gold medals.”
