Lamb open day focuses on flock performance
Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) has reported a successful open day for lamb producers, after more than 100 farmers attended an event looking to improve flock performance.
The open day, arranged by HCC and the Hampshire Down Sheep Breeders’ Association, was held at Paul and Eirlys Williams’ sheep farm in Carmarthenshire. HCC said its purpose was to provide farmers with an opportunity to discuss ways of maximising their flock and forage potential.
John Richards, HCC’s industry information executive, spoke at the event, looking at utilising genetics to produce lambs to meet market requirements.
Richards summed up the day: “Three important messages were apparent during the course of the open day – the importance of improving grassland management, the timely and correct use of anthelmintics, and the need to ensure that what is being produced is what the market requires.
“It was a successful event, attracting sheep farmers who were keen to develop their flock, especially as more and more lambs enter the market over the coming months.”
