National Meat Products Competition Supreme Champion crowned
Craig Finch of Craig Finch Butchers in Harborne, Birmingham, has won the Supreme Champion accolade at this year’s National Meat Products Competition.
Run by the National Federation of Meat and Food Traders (NFMFT) and held at this year’s Foodex show at the NEC in Birmingham, the event attracted 382 products from 48 butchers, farm shops and delis.
Finch, who won the 2014 Champion of Champions award, won the speciality sausage category and the Supreme Sausage category as well as the top prize for his pork and leek sausages.
On winning the award he said: “It’s an honour to win and great for the business. The staff are always pleased when we when as it’s a recognition of the hard work they do.”
A regular contestant on the competition circuit, Finch took the last few months off from competitions and was involved in the judging process of other awards. “It was interesting but the joy for me is in competing. I love entering these awards so it was hard to stay away.”
NFMFT chief executive Roger Kelsey said it was tough year for the judges, given the sheer number of great products. “The standards were very high this year and the number of products shows great enthusiasm for the sector.”
Special mention went to the black pudding category which attracted particular interest, and new category, scotch egg which also proved very popular.
